What are the obligations for chemicals in terms of transport?
To ensure the free trade of dangerous goods and protect human health and the environment, the United Nations developed a globally harmonized system of rules.
This framework led to specific regulations for each mode of transport. In Europe, the main ones are:
- ADR – road transport
- RID – rail transport
- IMDG – maritime transport
- IATA – air transport (based on ICAO regulations)
If you place hazardous substances or mixtures on the market, you must ensure their compliance with the relevant transport regulations.
What does transport have to do with safety data sheets?
Transport information is mandatory in section 14 of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and must include:
- UN number
- Official transport designation
- Hazard class
- Packing group
- Environmental hazard indication
- Special precautions for each type of transport (road, rail, sea, air)
- Bulk maritime transport according to IMO instruments
How do I determine the transport information for the SDS?
Determining the correct classification for transport can be complex, especially without an ADR consultant.
EPY-Tras, the transport module available in EPYplus and EPY X, makes your work easier: with just a few input data, it automatically completes all the information required for section 14 of the SDS.
